The year in film so far has been a crazy and innovative year! They way stories are being told and who is telling these stories is rapidly changing to include more authentic stories and storytellers.


Wonder Woman

As the first of it’s kind, Wonder Woman flew in and did not disappoint. As the first full length feature film starring a female superhero lead from DC, this film follows the journey of Dianna and how she finds the ultimate strength to become Wonder Woman! Not only is this the first female superhero movie from DC but it’s the first female directed film with a $100 million dollar budget. Rotten Tomatoes: 92%


Get Out

Jordan Peel’s directorial debut made every wave possible! Get Out tells the story of Chris, an African American man going home to meet his white girlfriend’s family for the first (and last) time. While on the surface the film may seem like your typical scary or comedy movie, audiences quickly took notice to the societal commentary aspect of the film. Peele used several examples to illustrate how black people in American feel when we are treated or talked to in certain way. Rotten Tomatoes: 100%


Beauty and the Beast

This award-winning cartoon saw its live-action adaption released this year! Starring Harry Potter alum Emma Watson, the loveable children’s story took on a new life. There were some noticeable changes to the film that made it more realistic, in a sense but the tone of the film stayed the same. We still get the musical numbers that we know and love with some new music added in to spice it up! Rotten Tomatoes: 71%


The Fate of the Furious

The eighth installment in the series drover right into the hearts of Furious fans everywhere! As the franchise continues to pick up the pieces after the sudden death of lead actor Paul Walker, The Fate of the Furious proves that there is no plan to slow down anytime soon. This film shows the crew members living a regular life until someone comes along and tries to threaten everything they know. Fun fact; this is the seventh most expensive movie ever made! Rotten Tomatoes: 66%


All Eyez on Me

The long overdue Tupac biopic has finally been released! After years of speculation and talk, fans and audiences everywhere finally saw one of the most famous and still talked about rappers finally receive the biopic treatment. With a lookalike that would confuse even the truest of Tupac fans, the film takes a walk down memory lane through some of Tupac’s best, worst and most defining moments. Rotten Tomatoes: 19%


Hidden Figures (National Release)

This period piece chronicles the lives of three every important but hidden African American women and their contribution to launching John Glen into orbit for the first time. The lead roles were played by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae and their performances did not disappoint. Winning the Screen Actor’s Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a cast in a Motion Picture, this film is one that is needed for the society of today. Rotten Tomatoes: 92%


Everything, Everything

This modern day love story proves that nothing can stop love! Based on the book Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon, this film follows a young girl that has been diagnosed with a terrible illness that leaves her confined to her home. As she begins to get to know the new boy next door, the curiosity of the outside world becomes too much for her to handle and she has to go and see for herself! Rotten Tomatoes: 49%


Logan

The final installment of the Wolverine series slashed its way into theatres and made quite a mark! This film follows Logan years after the last installment of the series. He is now caring for a sick Professor X and trying to find peace in his new life when he meets a young character just like him that he can’t help but try and save. This action-packed film left Wolverine fans begging for more and if you know Hollywood, it only takes so much begging to get what you want! Rotten Tomatoes: 93%
